Governors

The role of the Governing Body is largely strategic, working together with the Headteacher to:
  • Set aims and objectives for the school
  • ​Adopt and monitor policies for achieving the aims and objectives
  • Monitoring progress against the aims and objectives​
  • ​Set targets for achieving progress
  • ​Maintain a sound financial strategy
The number in each category of governors and the way in which individual Governors are selected, is detailed below. We have two associate governors who are retained due to their expertise in order to support the Governing Body when necessary. They have no voting rights.

Sub-Committees

Finance and Premises Committee

​Terms of Reference                                                  
  • Meets minimally once per term.
  • Consists of a minimum 5 members, of whom at least 4 must be present.
  • Reports to the Governing Body on financial & premises matters.
  • Operates at all times within the school’s delegated budget.
  • Makes recommendations to the Governing Body regarding the delegation of financial authority to the Head teacher and senior staff.
  • Reviews annually the efficiency and compliance of the schools financial management systems, including the finance manual.
  • Agrees and submits for approval such medium and long term plans as the Governing Body may require.
  • Agrees the annual budget for ratification by the full Governing Body at the appropriate time during the financial year.
  • Ensures that all financial plans are integrated with the School Improvement Plan.
  • Monitors and reports to the Governing Body termly on expenditure against budget and any in-year adjustments required.
  • Considers and approves annual financial statements, including those for the school’s unofficial funds, for submission to the Governing Body and to parents as required.
  • Approves and reports all virements to the Governing Body.
  • Receives proposals from the Personnel Committee on employee related matters.
  • Reviews any policies delegated to the Finance Committee by the Governing Body.
  • Receives reports from, and liaises with, the LA’s Audit Service.
  • Ensures that adequate measures are in place for the security and safety of cash, stocks and assets.
  • Undertakes benchmarking reviews.
  • To conduct inspections of the premises and grounds and identify priorities making recommendations to the Governing Body.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance of the school’s premises, facilities, fittings, grounds and services.
  • Oversees Premises related bids in consultation with the Head Teacher and the Finance Committee.
  • Oversee the letting of contracts for cleaning, grounds maintenance, catering and repairs and improvements.
  • Monitor and review the school’s Health and Safety Policy and consider regularly health and safety issues associated with the building and grounds.

Personnel Committee

Terms of Reference   
This committee brings together a number of areas related to staffing, e.g. pay, grievance and disciplinary procedures, dismissal and selection for redundancy.
  • Consists of a minimum of 5 members, of whom at least 4 must be present.
(NB Governors who are a member of this committee cannot be a member of the Appeals Committee.)
  • Has delegated powers to resolve all matters concerning staffing, including performance management, pay, appointments and resignations, maternity leave, and other long-term absence, grievance, discipline and dismissal.  (Governors who are               staff of the school must withdraw from a meeting for agenda items that relate to the performance or pay of colleagues in school).
  • Keeps the staffing structure of the school under review and makes recommendations, as appropriate, to the full Governing Body.
  • Meets at least once per term.  The Autumn meeting considers the appraisal process.  The Summer term meeting undertakes a review of the staffing structure for the subsequent year.  
  • Takes the lead role in the recruitment of members of the Leadership Group and Senior Management.
  • To review any policies delegated to the Personnel Committee by the Governing Body.

Pastoral and Curriculum Committee

Terms of Reference   
  • Consists of a minimum of 5 members, of whom at least 4 must be present.
  • Meets once per term.
  • Considers pastoral and curriculum issues as necessary, the School Improvement Plan in detail and links to the SEF.
  • Reviews annually those curricular policies that are required by the DFE., in order to make recommendations to the Governing Body.
  • Advises the Governing Body on all aspects of the wider school curriculum, pastoral matters and community education, in onsultation with teaching staff and relevant agencies.
  • Receives reports from Link Governors following visits or other contact with their departments as appropriate.
  • Prepares an annual submission to the Finance Committee for funding levels of curriculum resources.
  • To review any policies delegated to the Pastoral & Curriculum Committee by the Governing Body.

Within this structure the full governing body also determines working groups/committees on data in school, performance related pay appeals and other topics as required.
